Join us in welcoming WAVES Scholar Dr. Shi Joyce Sim, Assistant Professor of Geophysics at Georgia Institute of Technology next Thursday, February 5, 2026. Professor Sim will be giving a talk on Dynamic Habitability from mid-ocean ridges to Mars at 12:00pm in Exley 405 with lunch provided starting at 11:50am. Immediately following the talk, Professor Sim will head to Woodhead Lounge for a student-led meet and greet.

The WAVES Scholar program works within existing lecture series across the natural science and mathematics departments at Wesleyan. WAVES and the CIS partner with departments, programs, and student groups to sponsor speakers from diverse backgrounds. They may be early in their career, outside traditional academic networks, working in industry, engaged in interdisciplinary research, or focused on topics adjacent to scientific pursuit, such as ethics, bias, and communication. We are dedicated to highlighting the voices of the underrepresented to provide a platform for these scholars to share experiences and perspectives that inform their research, including about the communities their work serves or the professional and personal obstacles they overcame, and to provide appropriate role models for all students.
Dr. Sim’s lecture is part of the Earth and Environmental Sciences department colloquia series. The student-led chat is sponsored by WAVES and the Planetary Science Research Pod.
